HP 8410C NETWORK ANALYSER
The HP 8410C Network Analyser mainframe operates from 110MHz to 18GHz. It contains tuning circuits when used with the HP 8620C Sweep Oscillator, IF amplifiers and precision IF attenuator. It needs the HP 8411A Harmonic Frequency Converter to provide input reference and test channels and the HP 8412B, HP 8413A or HP 8414A display plug-in units. Cost new $4,400 in 1980. A HP Manual (B version) was downloaded from the Web (with 8411A).

A Network Analyser is an essential item of test equipment for designing and testing microwave circuits. Paticularly at higher frequencies, measuring scattering parameters (S-Parameters) of transmission (S12 & S21) and reflection (S11 & S22) become important considerations.

March 2007

Bought the 8410C (S/N 2416A) on eBay FR together with a 8411A & 8414A.

March 2008

Connected up the system with the 8620C & 86220A driving the 8411A via a 1167A Power Splitter. No input level shown on the Ref Channel Level meter and no display on the 8412B. More work needed when I have time!

March 2009

Bought a second 8411A as a spare.

February 2010

Made a HP 8120-2208 Source Control Cable to connect the 8410C to the 8620C Sweep Oscillator.

February 2015

Bought a HP 86290B RF Plug-In for use with the 8620C to provide 2GHz to 18.6GHz sweep capability.

March 2019

After a 11 year delay, started work on testing the 8410C again. Downloaded Manual Supplement 8410C which adds to the 8410B Operating and Service Manual.  The C version adds: external phase lock capability; rear panel 8411A input connection; IF output connection; front panel source switch.

Connected up the system as before with the same result, so more investigation is required.  See Repair HP 8410C Network Analyser for details.

August 2019

Now sweeping on all ranges from 10MHz to 18GHz with a good display of amplitude and phase on the 8412B. Started Performance Tests.

This Network Analyser with the 3 Plug-In Displays is a fairly complex system to operate, see Operating HP 8410C Network Analyser for more information.

Completed testing and as a system with 8620C, 86290B, 8411A, 8412B, 8418A & 8414A.

All the 8407A & 8410C based Network Analyser System has now been Sold.
