The HP 86260A RF Plug-In is used with the HP 8620C Sweep Oscillator and generates a RF signal in the range 12.4GHz to 18GHz. In 1980 this cost $3,050 and with the included Option 006 High Power Output (+10dBm instead of +7dBm) cost $3,350. A Manual was downloaded. The RF signal is generated by voltage tuned YIG (yttrium-iron-garnet) Oscillator. There is a very good description of YIG Oscillators in the Manual.
This RF Plug-In was bought as a scrap item and is missing its Front Panel, Connectors, Knobs, and side locking mechanism. See Repair HP 86260A RF Plug-In.

As the 86260A does not have internal leveling option fitted, the External Input is used to provide a dc input from a Crystal Detector or Power Meter. These provide a power leveling source via a power splitter or directional coupler from the RF Output.
Rear Panel view
The FM input can also be used for a phase-lock signal (PL position of switch). The Sweep Ref is a frequency reference voltage output. A Rear Panel RF Output can be provided with Option 004. Amplitude Modulation is available from the 8620C at 1kHz or via an external signal.

Options are:
001 Internal Leveling. This adds a directional coupler and a Crystal Detector to sample the output signal and provide a leveled RF output over the frequency range. An extra position is provided on the Front Panel ALC Switch for "INT".
004 Rear Panel RF Output.
005 APC7 RF Output Connector.
006 High Power Output.

Replaced with a similar unit HP 86290B RF Plug-In which covers 2GHz to 18.6GHz. The 86260A is therefore now for sale. SOLD
