OPERATING HP 1630D
STATE MEASUREMENTS
Set-Up

The Manual uses the HP 5036A Microprocessor Lab, as a test bed for State Measurements.

HP 5036A Test Bed

Connect GND to 0V.

Connect Pod 2 to the 9 lower bits of the Address Bus A0 to A8.
L Clock to to the 8085 Clock (pin 37).
Connect GND to 0V.

Connect Pod 3 to the 7 higher bits of the Address Bus A9 to A15.
Leave channels 7 & 8 not connected.
Leave K Clock not connected.
Connect GND to 0V.

Connect Pod 4 to the Control Lines to obtain Status information.
Channels 0 to WRITE, 1 to READ, 2 to ROM, 4 to A15.
Leave J Clock not connected.
Connect GND to 0V.

Pods 0, 5, 6, 7 are not used.

NOTE: I used short lengths of 22SWG TCW (Tinned Copper Wire) to make connections between the sockets and the PCB. The Grabbers were not suitable for the Address and Data connections.

Activating The State Analyser

I am using the 1630G which has up to 65 State Channels, rather than the 1630D which has up to 43 State Channels. The other advantage is that the 1630G can store setup configurations which the 1630D can not.

After power-up, press SYSTEM then use the cursor to select 65 State Channels.

Press RUN. This executes a single trace and displays a 2 column State Listing in Hex. Options of ASCII, REL + HEX, BIN, OCT, DEC as well.

Press FORMAT. Only probe channels assigned to a label are displayed. The 1630G assigns channels from Pods 5, 6 & 7 to label 'A0' and channels from Pods 1, 2 & 3 to label 'A1'.

Move the cursor to the Label column. Press INSERT to add a new label and type ADDR for Address. Press SHIFT ROLL left to display Pod 2. Move cursor to bit 6 of Pod 3, press NEXT to activate channel with a *. Repeat with bits 5 to 0, then bits 8 to 0 of Pod 2.

Add new labels for DATA and STAT. Press SHIFT ROLL left to display Pod 1. Activate DATA channels for Pod 1 and STATus channels for Pod 4.

Press LIST and change Label Bases to BIN. This now displays the listing for Address, Data and Staus in binary.

Press SYSTEM and NEXT to display the Peripherals menu. Change the Clock date and time if required. Select 'Save configuration in internal storage' YES to save. Once the Logic Analyser is set up, this configuration can be loaded on power-up.

Press WAVEFORM. This displays up to 16 channels. Move the cursor to the label and press NEXT or PREV to change the channel displayed between address 16 channels, data 8 channels and status 4 channels.

Move the cursor to Magnification to select between 1x, 2x, 4x, 10x, 20x & 40x. Individual parts of the waveform can also be magnified.

Press CHART. This displays activity charts, each label can be selected.

To get the best out of the 1630G it is essential to read the Operating and Programming Manual, there are many more facilities available.
